But that could change with the spring weather, because the mild winter also meant that fewer rats and mice died from natural causes, leaving more cold weather survivors.

During any year, people tend to see more rodents from April to June, because spring is their prime breeding season, and more mice and rats surviving means more rats and mice breeding.

If the spring and summer are exceptionally rainy, you can expect populations to grow even faster, as the wet weather allows for the growth of more water sources, food sources, including seeds and insects, and weeds for shelter.

As the weather warms, small ants are reappearing, trailing across yards and sidewalks, venturing onto porches and decks, and finding their way beneath doors and through cracks — into homes and businesses.

Instead of waiting for them to make their way to your kitchen, you can take preventive steps now:

Indoors

Eliminate open foods and water sources that may attract the ants.

Keep trash areas clean and trash bins covered.

Fix dripping faucets and leaky pipes.

If ants were trailing on counter tops, clean them with a mild dish detergent (such as Dove or Dawn) and warm water. Harsh smelly products (like ammonia-based products) can cause the ant colony to “bud” — splitting and creating multiple ant colonies to preserve itself.

Outdoors

Trim tree limbs and branches that touch or overhang the house.

Eliminate piled leaves and clutter where the ants can nest.

Keep the area around the foundation clear of mulch or other ground cover.

Home Protection

Ant management is an integrated part of Pioneer Pest Management’s Home Defense and Commercial Protection ongoing maintenance programs. To protect your family, home, or business:

We inspect the property to identify the invading ant, attractant, and means of entry.

We will implement Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies to reduce or eliminate populations and control infestations.

When needed, the IPM service will include use of professional baits or insecticides for maximum control.

We will also recommend areas of exclusion, sanitation, or other actions you can take to help reduce ant attraction, means of entry, and future invasion.

As a part of the Pioneer Home Defense and Commercial Protection programs, we will maintain a constant vigilance against new populations and respond to any such service request you may have.
